Q: What’s a spirit-filled church like?
A: It’s a church where members obey the will of God.
Five Main Points For Today’s Message:
I. The Antioch Church Sent Out Missionaries. - L v. 1
“Barnabas” means son of exhortation.
“Niger” means black.
A) It was a diverse Church.
B) The Antioch Church welcomed all people.
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
II. The First Missionaries Had Special Gifts. - L v. 1
A) They were gifted as prophets. - L v. 1; L Acts 15:32
B) They were gifted as teachers. - L v. 1
II Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
III. The First Missionaries Were Called While Ministering And Fasting.- L v. 2
A) The chosen men were faithful to the ministry. - L v. 2
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Lesson: God calls those who are faithful where they are.
I Corinthians 4:2
Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.
B) The men chosen were men of prayer/fasting.
IV. God’s Spirit Called God’s Missionaries. - L v. 2
A) The Holy Spirit is used by God to call servants. - L v. John 15:16
B) God’s call is to be separated for Him.
C) God’s call involves work.
V. The Church Commissioned These Missionaries. - L v. 3
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
A) They fasted and prayed over these matters.
B) There was the laying of hands. - L v. 3
C) They sent Barnabas and Saul away. - L v. 3
Four Points Of Interest
1) God chooses faithful people to do His work. - L v. 2
2) God uses the Holy Spirit to call ministers. - L v. 2
3) God calls ministers to work. -- L v. 2
4) By fasting and praying, God can reveal His will.
