The Great Decree of salvation
"L" = Look Up
“Unity” can’t force people to do what’s not right.
“Salvation” is God’s grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ plus nothing.
Five Points for Today’s Message:
I. The Attitude that Brought About the Decree. – L- v.23
Question: What was the attitude?
“Greetings” comes from a
Greek word meaning rejoice.
II. Rituals and Laws Are Not Necessary for Salvation. L - v.24
A. Judiazers troubled the believing Gentiles.
“Unsettling your souls” means to devastate or cause havoc.
“Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
B. The Judaizers were not commissioned by the church. - L- v.24
III. Men Were Chosen to Proclaim the Truth. – L - v.25-27
A. Barnabas and Paul were sent to proclaim the truth.
“With one accord” indicates unity.
“Risked” literally means given up.
Jesus said, “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.”
B. The Jerusalem church sent two supporters. – L- v.27
Jesus said, “If he refuses to hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.”
Salvation = God’s grace of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord + nothing.
IV. A Few Rules Were Necessary. – L- v.28,29
A. The Holy Spirit helped in the decision. – L- v.28
B. James writes some necessary rules. – L- v.29
1) Abstain from eating sacrificed meat to idols.
I John 5:21
“Little Children, keep yourselves from idols.”
2) Do not murder. – L- v.29
3) Do not eat meat from strangled animals. – L- v.29
4) Abstain from sexual immorality.
I Timothy 5:22
“Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.”
V. The Glorious Results of Free Salvation. – L- v.30-35
A. There was great rejoicing. – L- v.30,31
I Timothy 2:4-6
“(Jesus Christ) desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all…”
B. Judas and Silas exhorted the believers. – L- v.32
C. More teaching helped the Gentile believers. – L-v.33-35
Four Points of Interest:
1. You must have humility to have church unity.
“Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up…”
2. Church unity must be based on the truth of God’s Word.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
3. Church unity requires risking our lives for Christ. - L- v.26
4. Unity in Christ involves keeping God’s Word and compromising the nonessentials. - L- v.28,29
