Lesson 24: He’s Near
Lesson 24, Devotion 1
There are times when God uses His followers to comfort one another. In these times, we have the opportunity to demonstrate His nearness to others.
How can you be used as a demonstration of God’s nearness this week to someone who is suffering? Spend a few minutes developing a game plan. Then set out this week to complete it. (Remember, success in this type of situation is determined by your obedience to listen to God’s call, not the person’s response.)
Step 1: Identify - Who do you know that is suffering or dealing with a troubling time right now?
Step 2: Pray - Spend a few minutes praying that God would direct your steps.
Step 3: Action - What is your plan to show this person that God is near to them? How will you allow God to use you?
Step 4: Go! - Now it’s time to do what you’ve planned! Go out there and show the nearness and comfort of Christ to someone who needs it!
Lesson 24, Devotion 2
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” - John 14:27
There comes a time in everyone’s life when they will deal with suffering and troubles. Some have them as early childhood while others may be teens. There is no set age for when someone may first encounter them. But as we talked about in your Bible study, everyone will experience suffering at some point.
So how do we deal with it?
Think for a minute about the things you see on TV or in magazines. Think about the advice you’ve heard others give or receive. Think about what you may have heard another student or a teacher at school say. What are some ways we are told we can find peace when we are experiencing suffering? List those below:
Read John 14:27. The world gives us many suggestions on how to find peace. Some would say you find it by ignoring your problems. Others might tell you to return the suffering on another. Still, others would say you indulge in pleasures such as drinking alcohol, shopping, sex, or drugs. The problem with these solutions is that they are temporary, and some of them can lead to worse trouble.
Where does Jesus say we will find the true peace we are looking for? True and eternal peace is found in Christ and a relationship with Him. Though this peace doesn’t mean our suffering will go away, it means we will be able to withstand it here on earth. His peace also gives us hope for eternity. Though it’s not always easy, we must keep in mind, even when the struggles seem to overwhelm us, that Christ has redeemed us and we have a peace in Him that the world knows nothing about.
Lesson 24, Devotion 3
"In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33
What a great verse to have committed to memory when facing troubling times.
Today take some time to begin memorizing this verse. Use a method that works best for you, but continue to review it. It will be one you will often use in life.
