Lesson 34: Putting Your Gifts To Good Use

Lesson 34, Devotion 1

Today, take a moment to read this quote that your leader may have even mentioned in your lesson:

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

 - Frederick Buechner

Think about this:

  • What are some of your passions?  What are some things that you do when you feel like God is smiling down from heaven on you?

  • What are some needs that you see around you today? At school? At church? In the neighborhood? At work?

  • How can you use your gifts that you are passionate about to meet those needs?

Lesson 34, Devotion 2

Today, you have a simple challenge. Find someone who knows you well that is not related to you. This could be a best friend, classmate, or someone in your youth group. Take some time today to either ask them face-to-face or text them the following questions:

  • What do you think that I am pretty good at?

  • If you were to pick my strengths, what would they be?

  • What do you see me get excited about?

Now, the purpose of asking these questions is to help you get a better idea of what your passions are. Here's why. Often (not always, but often) these passions can be arrows pointing at your areas of spiritual gifts.

As you seek to be someone who truly uses his or her gifts to serve your church and grow God’s Kingdom, discovering what your gifts are is important. The cool thing is that God wants you to serve and He wants you to serve how He’s gifted you. So, He makes it easy to find your giftings.

Pray to Him, asking Him to show you what your gifts are. But, then, simply get busy! Jump in doing something your church does that seems like it would excite you. If it does, if you enjoy it, feel fulfilled by it, or are otherwise good at whatever it is you’ve started doing, chances are, this is an area God has gifted you in.

Asking others is a fun way to begin to find these answers about yourself and your gifts. But simply jumping in the deep end of God’s work in the world is the best way to see where God is calling you to serve.

What are you waiting for?

Lesson 34, Devotion 3

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” - 1 Corinthians 12:7

Throughout this week’s lesson, you saw that spiritual gifts were to unite the Church together on mission. In our own sinfulness, we have a tendency to compare ourselves to other people instead of praising God for the gifts He has given us.

Take a few minutes and pray that God would show you the areas in your life where you are strong, where God is able to really use your gifts for His service. As the areas come to mind, you can write them out in your journal or note-taking app.

Then, pray that God will show you some areas in which you can grow. As the areas come to mind, you can write them out as well.

Today, surrender these things to God and spend some time praising Him for the gifts He has especially given to you, His beloved child.
