AMPLIFY: Humility

Lesson 40: Living Humbly

Lesson 40, Devotion 1

Think about something you enjoy doing. It can be a sport, a hobby, a school subject, or anything that makes you happy to do. Now think a little bigger, and imagine you were the best person in the world at doing that specific thing. How would you act when you were around other people if you were the best at your specific activity? How would you act around other people who like that specific activity if you were the best in the world?

Take a moment and read Ephesians 4:1-3. Paul is likely writing this letter from a later point in his life while he was an actual prisoner. In his letter though he mentions that is a “prisoner for the Lord.” He also mentions living a life worthy of the calling you have received.

The tools he gives us to live out this calling are humility, gentleness, and patience. Paul is trying to remind us that our positions and things we enjoy doing are not only for us, but they are for the glory of the Lord. We are called to live out the life God has called us to in the best way we can to bring all the attention and honor towards God.

Take a moment to think again about that activity you focused on in the beginning. According to God’s plan, you ARE the best at that activity for His Glory. He created you to do that activity, so how are you going to use today to maximize Jesus through that activity?

Think About This:

  • What are some things that make it hard to live for the glory of God in our lives rather than ourselves?

  • How can you apply gentleness, patience, and humility towards the activities you are a part of?

Lesson 40, Devotion 2

Humility is broken down into eight phrases that can be used to pursue a humble life. Take a moment and consider three you would like to start applying this week.

  • H - Honor Everyone You Meet

  • U - Understand People You Talk To

  • M - Make Yourself Go After Everyone Else

  • I - Initiate Conversations with the Unpopular

  • L - Love Even Angry or Rude People

  • I - Insert Real Compliments to Everyone

  • T - Take a Moment to Pause Before Speaking

  • Y - Yearn for Jesus

Say a prayer asking Jesus to help you with strength and patience to do three of these in your week this week!

Lesson 40, Devotion 3

Read this Quote:

“Being Humble means recognizing that we are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others.” - Gordon B. Hinckley

Think About This:

  • If you started living your life looking only to make others important, how would your life look different today?

  • What role should God play in empowering you to make a difference in the lives of others?

  • Why does properly viewing God change the way we view ourselves?
